Recently the South African Hake industry received a rare honour when the UK-based Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) declared its hake trawl industry to be a sustainable resource. With the seal of the MSC, environmentally conscious European and US consumers will now have an added incentive to choose South African Hake. The MSC standard is the main internationally recognised set of environmental principles for measuring fisheries to assess if they are well managed and sustainable. South Africa's is the first Hake fishery anywhere in the world to receive accreditation.
