Gavin graduated from the University of Natal, with a B.Sc in Building Management. He held various senior managerial positions in project management, engineering/construction and general management, whilst in the employ of companies such as BKS Consulting Engineers, SM Goldstein, Chemrite, Prostruct and Stoncor. Gavin joined Oceana Fishing Division in 1999 and is currently Managing Director of Oceana Brands.
